The Architect

Senior Software Engineer

As a computer-science student I hated SQL. The syntax felt cryptic, the concepts abstract, and the learning path was a wall of textbooks and toy exercises. Memorizing JOIN variants and untangling nested queries left me disconnected from the actual power of databases.

Years later, after using SQL daily in production, I realized the problem wasn't the technology. It was how we teach it. Students deserve better than dry walls of syntax and disconnected drills. They deserve context, narrative, and real challenge.

SQL Protocol is my answer to that. It turns database querying into an immersive intelligence operation. Each query isn't syntax practice; it's a step in solving a case, a tool for uncovering a pattern hidden in data.

The game is built for the student I used to be: someone who learns by doing, by failing, and by the rush of finally cracking a complex query. Whether you're preparing for technical interviews, sharpening professional SQL skills, or simply love puzzles, this is your training ground.

Mission objective: make SQL mastery not just achievable, but genuinely enjoyable.

What the game is

A story-driven SQL campaign with a timed interview mode and a live 1v1 Arena. Every query you type runs against a real database. No multiple choice, no stub answers. Your progress, XP, and ranks are all computed server-side.

Tech stack

  • Next.js 16, React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS on the frontend.
  • Nakama game server for auth, storage, matchmaking, and leaderboards.
  • Google OAuth for sign-in. Guest sessions use Nakama device auth and can upgrade to a Google account without losing progress.
  • Real PostgreSQL under the hood for query execution.
